Background: AMID A RURAL SETTING 15-MILES NORTH-WEST OF MUNICH LIES THE SMALL VILLAGE OF DACHAU, WHERE DURING THE NAZI REGIME IN GERMANY THOUSANDS OF PRISONERS WERE PUT TO DEATH AND TORTURED, IN A REIGN OF BRUTALITY WHICH LASTED 12 YEARS. TODAY, THE DACHAU CONCENTRATION CAMP LOOKS MUCH AS IT DID DURING THE NAZI ERA -- THE BARBED WIRE FENCES, THE WATCH-TOWERS AND THE HUTS OCCUPIED BY THE INMATES REMAIN, EXCEPT THAT THE "INMATES" OF DACHAU TODAY ARE PENSIONERS SUPPORTED BY AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION IN BRUSSELS.

HOWEVER, AN ADDITION IS BEING MADE TO THE DACHAU CAMP, A CONVENT FOR THE CARMELITE ORDER OF NUNS. THE PROJECT, FINANCED BY PUBLIC FUNDS, WAS BEGUN ON THE INITIATIVE OF BISHOP NEUHASLER OF MUNICH, HIMSELF A FORMER INMATE OF DACHAU.

TO BE COMPLETED BY AUGUST 1964, THE CONVENT WILL BE OCCUPIED BY 21 SISTERS OF THE CARMELITE ORDER AND WILL STAND AS A MEMORIAL TO THE 30-THOUSAND PRISONERS WHO DIED AT DACHAU BETWEEN 1933 AND 1945.

SOME OF THE SISTERS WHO WILL EVENTUALLY LIVE AT THE DACHAU CONVENT ARE HELPING WITH CONSTRUCTION WORK AT THE BUILDING SITE.
