Background: It was quarter-finals day at Forest Hills on Wednesday (5 September) in the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. In contrast to the previous days of the competition, upsets were few, with the surviving seeds who played winning through to the semi-finals.

Veteran Ken Rosewall, 38, showed that the skill and speed were still as sharp as ever, as he defeated India's Vijay Amritraj, straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

Amritraj, surpriser victor over Rod Laver earlier in the tournament, was never in the match. Rosewall dropped his serve only once as he coasted to victory. He has now won fifteen straight sets in the competition.

Rosewall's semi-final opponent will be fellow-countryman John Newcombe who, eliminated another young star, Jimmy Connors of the U.S.A. Newcombe, in a battle of big serves and volleys, which he won 6-4, 7-6, 7-6, never dropped his serve and won both tiebreakers by five points to four.

In the Ladies' Singles, third-seeded Chris Evert, of the United States, and fourth-seeded Evonne Goolagong of Australia, both advanced comfortably to the semi-finals. However, at one stage in the second set, Miss Evert, playing Rosemary Casals of the United States, was down 3-5; yet she rallied to break Miss Casal's serve twice. Surprisingly, Miss Casals played much of the game from the back of the court, rarely advancing to the net. Her tactics ultimately proved unsuccessful, as Miss Evert won 6-1, 6-5. In the other semi-final, Evonne Goolagong defeated fellow-country woman Kerry Melville, 6-3, 7-5.
