    Background: COALINGA, CALIFORNIA, USA

After an earthquake rocked the mid-Californian town of Coalinga on May 2, rescue workers mounted a large-scale clean up operation. The 'quake' registered 6.5 on the Richter scale, but despite its severity, no deaths were reported in the United States oil and agriculture town. Twenty-five people were injured, four had to be hospitalized. They were taken to Fresno 95 kilometres (60 miles) away because power was cut in Coalinga's hospital. One hundred and fifty homes and buildings were damaged, some of them completely levelled, while students of the junior college slept on the lawns after their dormitories were severely damaged. One resident said she hardly knew where to start cleaning up with all the debris in her house. Rescue workers were hampered by continuing earth tremors. Roadblocks were set up around the area and police marksmen patrolled to prevent looting. Damage has been estimated at 25 million dollars and California Governor George Deukmejian has declared the town a disaster area in an effort to obtain Federal government aid. The earthquake was felt as far north as San Francisco and south to Los Angeles.
