    Background: HONSHU ISLAND, JAPAN

At least fifteen people have been reported missing after landslides and flooding followed an earthquake which jolted wide areas of central Japan on September 14. The epicentre of the quake, which registered 6.9 on the Richter scale, was in western Ngano prefecture on the island of Honshu. Police say the missing are from the small village of Otaki near the epicentre of the tremor. Authorities fear the missing people may have been buried alive. Some one hundred of Japan's Self-Defence troops were mobilised to help relief efforts in Otaki which has been cut of by a series of landslides and is without electrical power. Several roads have been completely destroyed and hundreds of people have been made homeless. One man died in the original earthquake and six have been reported injured. The widespread damage has hampered rescue efforts and a sixty-metre (yards) section of road has been completely demolished. Homes have been devastated and left perched on the edge of a thirty-metre (yard) deep crater.
