Das Island is the operating base for Abu Dhabi Marine Areas Limited. It receives crude oil from this company's Shaif and Zakum fields and from the Bundua Company's field of the same name. The site contains 260 columns and vessels, 330 pumps, 340 heat exchanges, 20 tanks, 14 compressors and 14 heaters. After the memorial plaque was unveiled, Sheikh Zaid and other guests toured the plant.

Das Island is the centre for Abu Dhabi's off-shore oil production. The plant spreads over 82 acres (33.6 hectares). Its initial production will be three million tons (tonnes) of gas a year....two million of natural gas and one million of petroleum gas. Sheikhs and other dignitaries from the seven member nations of the United Arab Emirates attended the ceremony. It began with an address by the general manager of the operating company.

Sheikh Ben Sultan Al Nahyan is the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and also president of the United Arab Emirates. Watching the unveiling were his fellow members of the Federation's Supreme Council, which comprises all the rulers of the Emirates. Work on the plant began less than two years after their federation was formed in December 1971.

Crude oil from three major fields is received here, stored and loaded onto tankers for shipment to refineries around the world. Previously gas was flared and wasted. The new plant turns it into liquefied gas.

GENERAL MANAGER: "On behalf of the partner companies, I have the honour of welcoming you all on this happy occasion to mark the commissioning of Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company's LNG plant. Work on this plant started four years ago, when his Highness Sheikh Zaid kindly inaugurated the structure, and now we are looking forward to him performing the unveiling ceremony, which will symbolise the beginning of 20 years of production.
