Background: Boxing....and the World Boxing Association's junior flyweight champion Yoko Gushiken of Japan has retained his title. He knocked out challenger Aniceto Vargas of the Philippines in the 14th round at Nagoya, Japan on Sunday (29 January). It was Gushiken's fourth successful defence of his title.

SYNOPSIS: The ninth round....when Gushiken, in the light shorts, began to increase his attack. After eight tame and rather dull rounds, Japanese referee Masao Kato had ordered the boxers to liven things up. gushiken peppered the lean Filipino with hard right and left blows to the body and head.

In the eleventh round, the power and intensity of Gushiken's attack forced Vargas into a corner, where he had to soak up more punishment. He was taking so much leather that referee Kato gave a mandatory standing count of eight.

The same round...and the 22-year-old champion appeared to be hitting Vargas at will. Gushiken was making up for the earlier tedium, when he had found the quick-moving Vargas an elusive target. The tough Filipino took another standing count.

On to the 14th round....vargas was helpless but Gushiken was making heavy work of finishing him off. But the end was not far away. Finally, Vargas was down, though not for long. But he had suffered a fearsome p?mmelli?g over the last five rounds and the referee finally called it quits.

Gushiken remains undefeated, having scored eight knockouts in his career of 13 bouts.
