Background: Before a crowd of 50,000 excited fans, Glasgow Rangers beat Borussia Munchen Gladbach by three goals to nil under floodlights at the Rhine Stadium, Dusseldorf, Germany, Nov 15. It was a quarter-final tie for the European Soccer Cup-winners Cup.
Showing superior skill and speed, the Scottish side outclassed the West Germans. In the twenty-third minute Rangers outside-right Millar got the ball inside his own half, dribbled through four West German defenders to within five yards of goal and scored with a magnificent kick with his left foot as he fell to the ground beneath a defender.
Three minute later team-mate Scott scored Rangers' second goal, and they never looked like losing the match.
Second half play was marred by some unpopular decisions from Yugoslavian referee Damiana, and robust play from both sides. At one point spectators left the stand and were prevented from entering the pitch by policemen.
After Macmillan had scored Rangers' final goal in the sixty-eighth minute, M. Damiana seemed to lose control of the game. Dieter Beduerftig, Borussia's outside-left, was carried off on a stretcher after a collision with Rangers' right-half Davis.
Both teams will meet again in Glasgow to decide on goal aggregate who will go through to the semi-finals.
