Background: The World Chess Championship which was scheduled to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, on Sunday (2 July) was postponed after the non-arrival of the challenger for the World Title...Bobby Fischer of the Unite States....and a request from him for a two-day delay to the start. Fischer will now play World Champion Boris Speassky of the Soviet Union on Tuesday (4 July) if he arrives in Iceland on time. Fischer has claimed that two telegrams advising the Championship organisers that he could not attend on Sunday have gone astray, and his layer is making use of the postponement allowed by the International Chess Federation to press claims for higher financial returns for participating. An official opening ceremony went ahead on Sunday evening (1 July) without Fischer. His absence wasn't referred to in the speeches.

SYNOPSIS: The Exhibition Hall in Reykjavik....the capital of Iceland..venue of the World Chess Championships, where diplomats, officials of the International Chess Federation, and members of the public gathered on Sunday for the opening ceremony. The challenger, Bobby Fischer of the United States, was not present however...he had not arrived in the country, but had been granted a two-day postponement of his World Title match with reigning Champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. Fischer had claimed that two telegrams advising his inability to attend had gone astray, end his lawyer was taking advantage of the postponement to continue pressing the organisers for higher participation fees, in what's been billed as the "chess match of the century."
Fischer's "best-of-24" matches with Spassky are now scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
