Background: PRESIDENT NGUYEN VAN THIEU OF SOUTH VIETNAM LEFT SEOUL, THE SOUTH KOREAN CAPITAL, FOR TAIWAN YESTERDAY STILL FLATLY REFUSING TO EVEN CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITY OF A COMMUNIST COALITION GOVERNMENT IN SAIGON. DURING HIS FOUR-DAY STATE VISIT HE MADE IT CLEAR, IN A SERIES OF HARD-HITTING SPEECHES, THAT HIS COUNTRY WOULD OPPOSE COMMUNISM TO THE LAST.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE SHORTLY BEFORE LEAVING SEOUL FOR TAIWAN, PRESIDENT THIEU WAS ASKED IF HE WOULD EVER ACCEPT A COALITION OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT AND THE NORTH IF IT WAS A MADE A CONDITION OF PEACE. THE 46-YEAR-OLD HEAD OF STATE REPLIED:
ON JUNE THE 8TH, PRESIDENT THIEU IS DUE TO MEET U.S. PRESIDENT NIXON AT MIDWAY ISLAND, IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN, AND HE USED HIS FOUR-DAY VISIT TO LINE-UP SUPPORT FOR THE FORTHCOMING VISIT. WHILE HE MADE THE USUAL PROTOCOL VISITS TO FACTORIES, THE REAL IMPORT OF HIS TRIP CAME FROM HIS MEETINGS WITH SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT PARK, WHO IS STRONGLY ANTI-COMMUNIST. BOTH MEN AND INTENT ON SLOWING DOWN WHAT THEY FEEL TO BE UNNECESSARY HASTE BY WASHINGTON TO MAKE CONCESSIONS AT THE PARIS PEACE TALKS.

THE JOINT COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY THE TWO PRESIDENTS PUT FORWARD THE POSITION WHICH PRESIDENT THIEU IS EXPECTED TO TAKE AT MIDWAY. THE TWO MEN CALLED FOR THE VIGOROUS FIGHTING OF THE CONFLICT WHILE THE PARIS TALKS GO ON; THEY REFUSED TO RECOGNISE THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT, AND THEY ARE STRONGLY OPPOSED TO ANY UNILATERAL TROOP WITHDRAWAL. TROOPS OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE ALLIES IN THE CONFLICT, THEY SAY, MAY BE PULLED OUT ONLY AFTER NORTH VIETNAM DOES THE SAME, AND THEN THEIR DEPARTURE MUST BE AGREED TO BY ALL THE TROOP-CONTRIBUTING NATIONS.

PRESIDENT THIEU LEFT SEOUL YESTERDAY FOR TAIWAN WHERE HE IS EXPECTED TO GET FURTHER MORAL SUPPORT FROM THE KUOMINTANG.
