Background: Low tide pictures of the Nyon, 4,956-ton Swiss cargo vessel a-ground off the Berwickshire coast at St. Abbs, Scotland, were caught by Visnews Nov 18 as volunteers and coastguards fired rockets across the ship with lines attached.

It was feared that with the wind rising from the south the ship might begin to break up.

The Nyon ran around on the "Meg Watson" rocks, three miles north of St. Abbs Head, on November 15. She lay with her bows between rocky points less than 100 yards from the shore, which runs to a steep 150-feet high cliff face.

Holed in the bows and damaged amidships, attempts were made to plug the holes with cement and to pull the vessel off the rocks with two Dutch tugs.

As early attempts failed, sea and wind conditions worsened and the 33-man crew was considered to be in increasing danger. Spectators on the cliff-top watched them being taken off.

The Nyon was unladen on a voyage to Eskar after discharging grain at Leith.
