Background: THREE SOVIET NAVAL VESSELS, INCLUDING A SUBMARINE, CONDUCTING AN INDIAN OCEAN OCEANOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION, HAVE BEEN BERTHED IN DAR ES SALAAM HARBOUR FOR BUNKERING AND REPAIRS. THE SHIPS, WHICH ARRIVED AT THE TANZANIAN PORT ON FEBRUARY 19, SAILED ABOUT THE HARBOUR ON WEDNESDAY (25TH FEBRUARY).

THE SUBMARINE IS THE LIRA, ACCOMPANIED BY THE 4,871-TON PASSENGER SHIP ESTONIA, WHICH IS BEING USED AS A FLOATING LABORATORY, AND A TANKER, THE YELGAVA.

A SOVIET EMBASSY SPOKESMAN SAID THE YELGAVA IS TO RECEIVE AN UNDERWATER INSPECTION BY DIVERS AS A RESULT OF MINOR DAMAGE.

THE EXPEDITION'S LEADER SAID RECENTLY THAT DAR ES SALAAM WAS THE SHIP'S THIRD PORT CALL ON THEIR CURRENT MISSION AND THAT HE HOPED THE EXPEDITION WOULD BE COMPLETED IN JUNE.
