Background: President Sadat of Egypt became the first leader of his country to cross the Suez canal for many years on Tuesday (24 December).
The President travelled to East Qantara to offer prayers there during the Qurban Feast. It was the first time an Egyptian President had stepped into Sinai since the area was captured by the Israelis in 1967.
President Sadat was accompanied by some other members of the Egyptian Cabinet, including Prime Minister Abdel Aziz Higazy, Minster of the Interior, Mamdouh Salem and army personnel.
After the service the President visited graves of martyrs and placed wreaths on them.
