Background: About 2,000 scientists - from 60 countries and accompanied by their wives - are meeting in Helsinki, Finland to discuss the results of the International Geophysical Year, which ended in 1959.

The opening session of the 12th General Assembly of the IUGG - International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics - July 26, was attended by Finland's President Kekkonen and Minister of Education Heikki Hosia.

IUGG's President, Professor J. Tuzo Wilson, Canada, said the IGY had been a splended example of international co-operation and had done much to make the public appreciate the importance of geophysics.

Unusual example of international co-operation in the IUGG is the joint membership of East and West Germany - efforts are being made to get Communist and Nationalist China to become joint members.

As the conference opened, a Russian scientist, Alexander Sagarmistr, cust his throat with a pair of scissors in Helsinki police station after asking for political asylum. He survived, and after asking to return to Russia was handed over to the USSR Embassy.
