Background: At least three people died in Newry during Friday night and Saturday morning as the Northern Ireland toll continued to mount. Two people died in a drapery store, set on fire during the evening. The rescue efforts of police and firemen were hampered by stonethrowing crowds. Police said later that they had a theory that the bodies may have belonged to would-be arsonists.

The third death occurred alter a British Army landrover was riddled with splinters from a landmine while on patrol just outside the town. One soldier died afterwards in hospital, and two others are seriously wounded.

B.B.C. camera teams filmed the search for bodies in the still smouldering store in Newry, the damage to the landrover and the hunt for clues to the killing in a nearby housing estate. The B.B.C. commentary accompanying the film is transcribed overleaf.

SYNOPSIS: In Northern Ireland, there were three new deaths in the town of Newry on Friday night and Saturday morning:
This is a drapery store which burned down in Newry during the night. Firemen found two bodies, and they've been searching the wreckage all day for a third. The fire brigade said that it was told there were people trapped in the blazing building, a when they arrived they were told that a me had been seen trying frantically to tear down the protective steel grill over a window. But he dies in the flames as a hostile crowd threw stones at troops and firemen trying to reach him.

Outside Newry, an Army landrover was ridd??? with nuts and bolts when a home-mae land mine exploded near it, killing a soldier standing on the tailboard and badly injuring two more in the front seat. A fourth man, inside the vehicle, was saved by fibre-glass armour. The men were return from a patrol along a dark road, and the landmine exploded at the side of the road as they passed. it had been detonated electrically, and yards of wire led acrose a field to the edge of a housing estate, where troops found a set of batteries taped together.

Armoured cars sealed off all roads leading from the estate. More troops moved into every street, and with the inhabitants milling around them, set up an intensive search. Among the things they found was a biscuit tin full of rivets and more electrical wiring.
