MKANDA: "Mr. Chairman, tragically, the refugee problem in Africa is the largest in the world, not least because of the prevalence of gross injustice in Southern Africa, and the denial of human rights by minority regimes. UNHCR assistance to refugees, from South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) has been given over a long period of time, both directly and through governments of countries of asylum. Action in this respect has ranged from ensuring that they are granted asylum to providing all necessary material assistance to those in need. We pledge, Mr. Chairman, that we will continue to do our best, in solidarity with the oppressed people from colonial countries in Africa, to extend protection and material assistance to refugees. In our daily work on behalf of refugees, we are faced constantly with tragic situations of destitution and plight. And our efforts to alleviate human suffering keep us painfully conscious of what man's injustice toward man can do to distort the harmony of human society."

KANGAI: "A number of people have left the war-torn Rhodesia to come to Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique, to seek refuge. So you find people there in thousands, who need clothing, educational supplies, medicines, and whatever you can think, for their survival."
