Background: An armada of fishing boats sailed up the Thames today (Friday 17 September) towards the House of Commons. They anchored in midstream urging the Government not to reduce Britain's 12-mile fishing limit if Britain joins the European Economic Community.

The fishermen were greeted at Westminster by Lord Boothby who led the 30-year fight for the 12-mile limit introduced in 1964.

Later, the fishermen marched to Downing Street where they handed in a petition to the Prime Minister at Number 10.

SYNOPSIS: An armada of 67 fishing boats sailed up the Thames on Friday in protest against Britain's acceptance of Common Market fishing terms of entry. The fishermen sailed up as far as Westminster where they handed a petition to MP's at Britain's House of Commons.

The boats had sailed rom Brixham in Devon for the protest voyage. The demonstration aimed at spotlighting the inshore fishing industry's fear that the Government will concede a reduction of Britain's fishing limit - from 12 to 6 miles - when talks with the European Economic Community on fishery policies reopen next week. The fishermen were met on-shore by Lord Boothby, the man who led the 30-year fight for the 12-mile limit introduced in 1964.

After Lord Boothby's statement, the fishermen marched across to Downing Street to hand a petition to Prime Minister Edward Heath's residence at Number Ten.

The petition was carried by Mr. Ernest Passmore, the Secretary of the Brixham Trawler Owners' Association. The men also telegraphed Mr. Heath to ask him to meet their leaders before their scheduled return sailing on Sunday morning.
