Background: In Tokyo private taxi drivers mounted a massive protest outside the Ministry of International Trade and Industry last Thursday (December 13th, 1973) after a taxi drive committed suicide because of the fuel shortage.

The driver, Tsuruo Takahashi, 37, went deeply into debt recently to buy his first taxi. Two months ago when the international fuel crisis began supplies of liquid petroleum, on which all Tokyo taxis run, were allocated to the major taxi fleets.

No provisions were made for the 7,000 private drivers who began receiving only spasmodic supplies. Faced with ruin Takahashi hanged himself leaving a widow and child behind.

His death caused an outcry from his follow drivers and the public. However, there's still no guarantee that private taxis will got any more than two gallons a day and most will have to manage with a lot less.
