They won by three laps, having lost five laps at one point with an unscheduled ten minute pit stop, It was Jackie Ickx's third victory in the six hour sports car endurance race -- which counts towards the World Championship for Makes.
SYNOPSIS: There were 44 entrants at the start -- ahead of them the daunting prospect or a scheduled 173 laps round the three-and-a-half mile track, with eleven bends per lap.Iokx and Mass led the field for the first 76 laps in their white Porsche 935. It was an overwhelming victory for the German manufacturers whose cars took the top places in the race, giving Porsche a massive lead in the makers' world championship table.
Porsche's strongest challenger in the series, BMW, was out of competition barely an hour into the race. The biggest threat to the Porsche domination, the BMW of Sweden's Ronnie Peterson and England's David Hobbs had brake failure and the car laughed through two rows of catch fencing. It re-entered the race after repairs but was retired soon afterwards with bent steering.
Ickx and Mass lost five laps and the lead on lap 76 with an oil leak on a valve cover. The new leaders were Hurley Hawood and Bob Hagestad of the USA, in a Porsche 934. There were several crashed in the race, but none serious. Ickx and Mass didn't regain the lead until lap 135, but once they'd re-established their authority they kept it for good. Second place went to George Follmer and Brett Lunger, also of the United States, and Haywood and Hagestad came third. Ickx and Mass got a big welcome after the victory. Ickx commented later `It wasn't easy".
