"I am, as I've said many times, a strong adherent of Ambassador Moynihan, I've known him a long time and I am an enthusiastic supporter of his enthusiasms. I am not the same kind of person and don't pretend to be, but is doesn't mean we have disagreement about basic American policy. I feel very strongly that when America is attacked in the United Nations or anywhere else that it should be defended, and defended strongly and I intend to do that. But the same time, I do not think that there is a basic underlying reason for the confrontation between the United States of America and the third world."



"My experience under the general advisory committee on arms control and disarmament has brought me to the deep conclusion that is very important that the United States try its level best to work with the Soviet Union on a continuation of a decrease in tensions, and likewise on a re-arrangement of the terrifically difficult armaments problems."

Background: The new United States ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. William Scranton, says he does not think there is a basic underlying reason for confrontation between the United States and the Third World.

Speaking at a news conference at the United Nations on Friday (19 March), Mr. Scranton said however, that he felt very strongly that when America was attacked at the Untied Nations or anywhere else it should be defended strongyl, and he intended to do that.

Mr. Scranton presented his credentials to U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Kurt Weldheim on Friday.

He replaced Mr. Daniel Moynihan, who resigned last month after charging that some State Department officials were "undercutting" him.

Mr. Scranton said he was a strong adherent of Mr. Moynihan and an enthusiastic supporter of his ideals. While he didn't pretend to be the same kind of person, it didn't mean they disagreed about basic American policy.

The new ambassador also said it was very important that the United States tried its best to work with the Soviet Union to decrease world tensions.

Mr. Scranton is a former Governor of Pennsylvania.
