    ON WEDNESDAY MRS GANDHI TRAVELLED 280 MILES (450 K.M.) THROUGH THE LARGELY COMMUNIST-SUPPORTING AREAS OF TELENGANA AND ANDHTA. SHE SPOKE AT SIX RALLIES AND VISITED 36 ASSEMBLY AND SEVEN PARLIAMENTARY CONSTITUENCIES.

    DURING HER CAMPAIGNING MRS GANDHI HAS SPOKEN OF THE INTERNAL RIFTS WITHIN THE OPPOSITION PARTIES, AND SAID THE CONGRESS PARTY WAS THE ONLY PARTY TRULY REPRESENTING ALL OF INDIA'S 500-MILLION PEOPLE.

    SHE HAS SAID ONLY HER PARTY COULD GET INDIA THROUGH ITS PRESENT DIFFICULTIES, AND HAS APPEALED FOR UNDERSTANDING FROM THE ELECTORATE.

    INDIA HAS JUST EMERGED FROM ITS WORST YEAR OF CRISES SINCE INDEPENDENCE IN 1947. MRS GANDHI HAS BEEN IN POWER FOR THIS TIME, AND HAS BEEN CONFRONTED WITH SERIOUS PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM FAMINE AND DROUGHT AND INTERNAL RIFTS AND DISSATISFACTION.

    INDIA'S ELECTION COMES AT A TIME WHEN THE COUNTRY IS IN SERIOUS FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES AND THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE APPEARS GLOOMY.
