Background: Following the World Athletic Championships in Helsinki, international athletes have taken part in an invitation meeting in West Berlin. Triple world champion Carl Lewis equalled his Helsinki winning time of 10.07 seconds in the 100 metres, beating fellow American and world record holder, Calvin Smith. In the men's high jump event, Terry Peacock of the United States won with a leap of 2.33 metres. Steve Scott of the United States won the mile race in 3 minutes 49.2 seconds. Second was New Zealand veteran John Walker and third was West Germany's Thomas Wessinghage, who set a national record of 3 minutes 49.98 seconds.
