Background: Major-General Jaafar el-Nimeiry's victory over the July coup in Sudan received massive support in Khartoum on saturday (August 14). An estimated quarter-of-a-million people gathered at a rally in the capital to cheer General el-Nimeiry and give their support to his nomination as first President of the Sudanese Republic.
At the rally, the Sudanese leader gave the first indication of when the country's new constitution, currently being drafted, will be complete. The constitution, under which the ruling Revolution Command Council will be dissolved, should be ready before the end of the year. General el-Nimeiry said he would not himself accept the Presidency unless he obtained an overwhelming vote in next month's referendum.
