Background: Cycle racing... the third Tour de Tunisia was held, Mar 22. Teams from Holland, Austria, Belgium, France, Poland, East Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Tunisia and Yugoslavia took part. In all, 116 competitors.

In the first stage - from Tunis to La Marsa - the Germans completed the journey in 28 minutes 57 seconds. They were followed by the Swedes (28 minutes 58 seconds) and the French (29 minutes 6 seconds). At La Marsa, the Mayor watched the arrivals. After a break of three hours, competitors set off on the second stage - from La Marsa to Menzel-Bourguiba.

One this part of the course, the Swiss and Germans led the competitors, but in the final sprint, Claude Gerli (Number 34) of France came in first. He received a big kiss from "Miss Menzel-Bourguiba". The following day, the route took the cyclists to Bizerte. The event ends April 2, when cyclists will return to Tunis from Sousse.
