    Background: TOKYO, JAPAN

'Half-Iced', a 31-1 outsider, upstaged two of the world's leading thoroughbreds, John Henry and April Run, to win the 152.2 million yen (600,000 dollars) Japan Cup in Tokyo on November 28th. The 3-year old American colt, ridden by Canadian jockey Donald MacBeth, spurted clear in the closing stages of the 2,400 metre (1.5 mile) race to beat a 3-year old French filly in a photo-finish. It was the colt's first victory in a major race.
