One of the voices on the tape was assumed to be that of Patricia Hearst. (Unintelligible tape sound).



"Miss Hearst accused her family of indifference to her plight saying 'I don't believe you are doing everything you can. I don't believe you are doing anything at all'. She said 'It was not the SLA that is harming me but the FBI and your attitude toward the poor'. She said she was starting to understand about fascism in America and had learned to fire a shotgun in case of an FBI raid. Another voice on the tape was that of a woman who identified herself as a General in the SLA. She said the Hearst family had not met the demands in regard to the free-food programme. The woman complained the programme was disorganised and not enough food was being handed out.



The woman also mentioned two SLA members, Russell Little and Joseph Remiro, who are charged with the murder of Oakland school superintendent, Marcus Foster. The voice said Patricia could communicate with her family only if Little and Remiro were allowed to hold a national televised press conference. So far there has been no sign of response from the Hearst family. Mrs. Hearst went to Church as usual and when asked about the tape she said she knew that Patti may have been forced to make certain statement but she hoped that her heart remained free."

Background: Patricia Hearst -- the kidnapped daughter of American newspaper-owner Randolph Hearst -- has accused her father on a tape recording of not doing enough to get her freed.

The tape was found in a San Francisco cafeteria after a woman had telephoned a local radio station.

The self-styled Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) say they are holding Miss. Hearst. She was snatched from an apartment in Berkley six weeks ago and her captors demanded that Mr. Hearst set up a free-food scheme to help the San Francisco poor.

Mr. Hearst has spent two million dollars (880,000 sterling) on food for the poor, but a woman SLA member on the same tape recording dismissed his effort as inadequate. She said he was trying to distribute hog food instead of top quality goods.

Mr. Hearst has said he can put up no more money, but the Hearst corporation has said it will donate a further four million dollars.

On the tape, the SLA also asked that two of its members on murder charges in California's San Quentin jail should be allowed to hold a nationally-televised press conference.
