Background: It's an unusually hard winter in Sweden and the brand new ice-breaker 'Oden' is having a thorough baptism. The modern radar equipment clearly shows the extensive ice, which not far from Stockholm is about 9 feet thick. Work aboard an ice-breaker is tough and gruelling. Many of the boats are out in the pack ice for 4 to 5 months: not until May are the harbours in the north of the Baltic sea reasonable clear of ice. In Norrland, in fact, the ice is so thick and extensive at this time of year that not even the Oden can keep the waters clear. At Lulea, for example, a big British tanker is stranded in the ice ... and she'll have to stay there now until May, at least.
