Background: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew arrived in Cairo on Friday (19 September) on a two day official visit to Egypt as the guest of Premier Mamdouh Salem.
Singapore intends to hold a cultural week in Cairo soon to highlight the cultural and Islamic relations between the two countries. Singapore has a large Moslem minority in its two million population.
Singapore and Egypt established diplomatic relations in 1969. Relations have been developing smoothly ever since. The two countries have a commercial agreement which aims to increase trade. Egypt's Minister of Tourism, Ibrahim Neguib, will accompany Mr. Lee throughout his stay in Egypt. Premier Salem, Mr. Neguib, other Egyptian Ministers and members of the Singapore Embassy in Cairo Welcomed Mr. Lee at the airport.
