    Background: AMMAN, JORDAN

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has described his latest round of talks with King Hussein of Jordan as "successful". Speaking in Amman on January 10, Mr Arafat said certain parts of President Reaga's Middle East peace initiative were positive, although it was too early for Jordan and the Palestinian to form a joing delegations at any new peace negotiations on the region. King Hussein was later quoted as saying Mr Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organisation would have to make up their minds about US proposals for joint peace negotiations before the United States became preoccupied with other matters -- a reference to the run-up to the next presidential election in the United States. King Hussein also said he was planning shortly to embark upon a tour of Arab capitals. Following their talks, which ended on January 11, the two men hope to secure support from other Arab leaders, and from the Palestinian movement in general, before next month's scheduled meeting of the Palestine National Council.
