Background: WASHINGTON AP - President Johnson and Australia's Prime Minister Harold E. Holt pledged today their joint determination to do all they can to restore security in Asia and to seek reconciliation and peace with all.
The exchange took place as Johnson welcomed Holt for a series of intensive talks which will include security problems in the Far East and Middle East. Holt will visit Johnson again at his Texas ranch June 17-18 after making official visit to London and Ottawa.
Noting that this was the fifth meeting of the two in the past twelve months, Holt said he believes that in the last year "there had been growth of understanding and support for the role the United States is playing in the significant struggle in Vietnam."
While not predicting how long the Vietnam war might continue, Holt said that "perhaps the struggle may be shorter than the superficial evidence indicates."
"You at all times will be able to count on a friendly and loyal ally, Australia," he told Johnson.
