Background: Pastor Martin Niemoeller, World War 1 U-Boat Commander, today W.Germany's Protestant Church President was chief speaker Oct 30 at the opening of a new Lutheran Church at Worms, Rhine.

Among the assembly gathered for the ceremony were bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church in W.Germany and Protestant bishops.

It was at Worms, April 1521, that Martin Luther made his historic entrance on a farm cart to go on trial before the Emperor Charles.

When he refused to repudiate his books and teaching, he said: I will not recant -- Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me.

These words are on the monument to Luther in Worms.

The Church on the market place is on the site of an 18th century church which commemorated the Reformation.

The new church built in four years with the aid of Protestant funds throughout the world contains 15 large stained-glass windows representing the Apostle's Creed, a mosaic of natural coloured stones of Luther on trial and three bronze doors with relief from the sculptures.
