Background: English league first division Everton put an end to the Football Association Cup career of fourth division Colchester today (Saturday) with a five-goal victory in the quarter-final. The rout began with three goals scored in four minutes of the first half, but Colchester rallied impressively in the second half and were unlucky not to score.

Everton are joined in the semi-finals by Stoke City, who beat second division Hull City 3-2. The other two quarter-finals, Liverpool versus Tottenham and Leicester against Arsenal, both ended in goalless draws and will be replayed.
