Background: The American President, Gerald Ford, arrived in Jakarta yesterday (Friday) from Peking after a five-day visit to China. He stayed in the Indonesian capital for 20 hours before flying to the Philippines today.
Air Force One, the presidential aircraft, touched down in the late afternoon in light rain. Many of the official welcoming party and 400 newsmen gathered under tarpaulins while others kept dry under colourful umbrellas.
As the stepped down, President Ford was greeted by Indonesia's President Suharto and his wife, Tien. The American president was garlanded with purple orchids round his neck.
The two presidents stood erect while the national anthems of the United States and Indonesia were played and as a 21-gun salute boomed out.
President Ford and his family were then driven to the Merdeka (Freedom) Palace in the centre of Jakarta where they spent most of their visit - and where the two presidents held talks today for two hours.
A joint communique at the end of the American visit said both countries had agreed to hold regular ministerial meetings. There was no mention of any discussion on the security question in South East Asia or Mr. Ford's meetings with Chinese Leaders in Peking.
