Background: An anti-abortion demonstration has been held in the northern Portuguese town of Braga, an area noted for its conservative political views, as a protest against a Communist-proposed bill to legalise abortion. Braga is traditionally the most Catholic of Portugal's cities and organizers estimated that 10,000 marchers turned out. The bill, due to be debated in parliament shortly, aims to permit an abortion within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy if there is a danger to the mothers health, the possibility of a deformed child or severe social problems within the family. Unlike other European countries, Portugal traditionally has outlawed abortion under any circumstances. However, an estimated 10,000 illegal abortions take place each year and 2,000 women subsequently die from complications.
