Background: Brigadier A.A. Afrifa, announced in Tamale today that he has assumed command of the Fifth Battalion of the Infantry. In a broadcast over the local RADIO, Brigadier Afrifa, who is now touring the Northern Region, said he has also assumed command of the Tamale Carrison. The Brigadier said for the time being, he has appointed Major Daniel Oduro as a Commandant of the Parachute Battalion and Major Amadu Iddisah as commandant of the Airforce Training School and assigned him military command of the Northern and ??? Upper Regions. He said the Army will investigate whether ??? Lt-Colonel J.Y. Assasie who is chairman of the Northern Regional Committee of Administration HAD hand, in the abortive coup. The Brigadier said he thought Colonel Assasie's name was only mentioned in the attempted coup to give it some authority.
He appealed to the people to feel confident and said "We who staged the coup last year are capable of protecting you. The N.L.C. is still in existence".
Brigadier Afrifa had earlier watched a parachute demonstration by the trainees at the Airborne Training School in Tamale.
There was also a demonstration of how the jump down from an aircraft is done.
In an address to the soldiers, Brigadier Afrifa told them that they should not expect say reward for their hold action of the 24th February, last year.
He said it is the duty of a soldier to defend the country and its people and that the men of the Ghana Army will always safeguard the interest of the people. He said no future civilian government can interfere with the Ghana Army.
Brigadier Afrifa later visited the Para-Battalion where he took the salute AT A MARCA-PAST. He also saw a demonstration on a Kraka vehicle.
From the Para-Battalion, Brigadier Afrifa visited the 5th Battalion of Infantry, where he was the Commander until the coup. At the entrance to the barracks, Brigaier Afrifa inspected a guard of honour and later addressed officers and other ranks at a parade. He said the N.L.C. has a task to perform and it will do it utmost to restore the economy of the nation.
