Background: A United Nations Observer post on the Lebanese Israeli border has come under attack from militia forces. A U.N. spokesman said the post, manned by six Irish soldiers, was hit by small arms fire, but there were no casualties. The attack, which lasted for several hours, came as a strike was being staged in Beirut over a separate incident.

SYNOPSIS: The strike was called in protest at the blowing up of a statue of the late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The bomb attack took place over the weekend (4 November) in the village of Qab Elias about 50-kilometres(30 miles) east of Beirut. The strike was organised by Leftist organisations and affected Beirut's Moslem dominated western districts. Many shops and cinemas closed in response to the strike call.

The general shut down closely followed the kidnapping of two Moslem Religious leaders about a week ago. They were reported to be members of the extremist Moslem Brotherhood Organisation.

The strike was the second in as many weeks. At the end of October shop-keepers traders closed down for three hours in protest at a car bomb attack in the Capital. The attack, believed to have been aimed at a Leftist Militia Commander, killed eight people and injured more than thirty others.
