Background: Watched by a crowd of 65,000, Lisbon soccer club Benfica beat Rapid of Vienna, by 3-goals to nil in the semi-final of the European Cup. Playing on their own ground, the Portuguese champions gave spectators a final display of attacking soccer.
In the first-half they dominated play and whenever an Austrian player broke through he found himself up against a solid defence that made no mistakes. The first goal came ten minutes after the start of play when Benfica centre forward Agus scored from a well placed pass. From here on the Austrian goal was pounded with shots until Benfica scored again through Coluna, after 25-minutes of the match had gone.
On grim defence by Rapid and several desperate kicks in front of their goal prevented at least another two goals going to Benfica before half-time.
During the second-half Rapid staged several dangerous attacks and played a much more controlled game. Several times Benfica had to hurry their kicks to ease the pressure. However it was Benfica that scored the only goal of that half. Against the run of play Caven kicked it from far out on the left wing. Although the Austrian side tried hard to break through the Portuguese champions kept them out until the end of the match.
