    Background: VARIOUS, ASSAM STATE, INDIA

Following the large-scale violence and destruction of recent weeks in which at least 2,700 people died, there have been further killings in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam. Seven people were hacked to death in two villages in upper Assam on March 7, and police injured seven people in the state capital, Gauhati, when they opened fire to quell rioters. The killings left thousands of survivors, mostly Moslem Bengali immigrants, homeless, and a large relief operation was set up. Many of the 250,000 people in tented refugee camps, had to manage to cook and clean for themselves on basic equipment. Each refugee received a daily ration of rice and the authorities said they would make money available for refugees to rebuild their homes. Many villages, like Gohaingon, with its 200 huts and a temple, were razed to the ground. Thousands of the estimated 3.5 million Moslems in Assam fled to the neighbouring states of West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh. A night curfew was enforced by patrolling police in many areas. The violence was sparked off by state elections when the Hindu Assamese tribesmen and militant students objected to the inclusion on the electoral roll of many Moslem immigrants.
