Background: Algerian President Chadli Benjedid, on a two-day visit to Syria, has been holding talks with President Hafez Al-Assad. During a summit meeting on Sunday (23 March) the two leaders reaffirmed their determination to oppose the Egyptian-Israeli peace agreement. Later the same day President Al-Assad told an emergency Sports Federation Conference that reactionaries were damaging Syria to bring the country under American control. He said Arab steadfastness against Israel would end if Syria collapsed.

SYNOPSIS: During their talks the two leaders discussed what they termed 'the imperialist-Zionist reactionary onslaught' and pledged mutual assistance to resist it. They also reviewed a proposal for staging a summit conference of the Front for Steadfastness and Cooperation, a five-member Arab alliance opposed to Egyptian-Israeli peace moves. Later President Benjedid attended a Syrian Sports Federation emergency conference which decided to enlist armed groups to defend the country against what they described as American Imperialism, Zionism and reaction.

President Al-Assad attacked the United States, Arab reaction and the radical Moslem Brotherhood group, blaming them for a recent wave of violence in Syria. He said many members of the Moslem Brotherhood were against violence and condemned crime but others were exploiting religion for what he saw was their "own dirty political purposes". He claimed these members were reactionary agents of Israel and the United States, trying to embarrass Syria and her friends. The President stressed that Syria was offering sacrifices in defence of its progressive and honourable stand, but if Syria collapsed all Arab steadfastness against Israel would collapse.
