Background: INTRODUCTION: Nigeria became the first team to reach the semi-finals of the 1981 World Soccer Cup African qualifying competition on Saturday (25 April) when they defeated Guinea 1-0. The win gave them a 2-1 aggregate victory in the third round tie.

    SYNOPSIS:
The teams were evenly matched for their second clash, which followed a one-all draw when they first met on April 12 in Conakry, Guinea. Most of the action occurred in the second half, with Guinea playing in all white. Nigeria attacked strongly down the wing, but Guinea maintained a solid defence.

A crowd of 70,000 packed the National Stadium in Lagos for the match. With Nigeria pressing the attack, they were unlucky not to score before they did.

Nigeria attacked again with captain, Segun Odegbami, losing possession. But his error was soon corrected by teammate Henry Nwosu in centre field.

The crowd went wild as the home team went to the lead in the 46th minute. There were unexpected scenes as the fans began to spill on to the pitch.

The goal came too late in the half for Guinea to equalise, and Nigeria had notched up their third spectacular victory, having earlier defeated Tunisia and Tanzania. In other matches in the third round of the African Competition, Zaire are to meet Cameroun, Morocco to meet Egypt and Algeria play Niger.
