Background: INTRODUCTION: The favourite triumphed in the World Cyclo Cross championships in Hanover, West Germany on Sunday (30 January). Albert Zweifel retained his professional title, after leading throughout the race.

SYNOPSIS: The professionals attracted probably the most attention from the large crowd at the Neidersachsen Stadium. In all, 33 riders started the course.

After one lap inside the stadium, the cyclists tackled the main part of the course.

The route, which is over 15 miles (24 kilometres), has a reputation for being one of the most difficult of its type in the world and participation in the event means particularly rigorous training beforehand.

Zweifel took an early lead and kept it throughout.

British riders proved to be completely outclassed by the other professionals. In fact, Zweifel lapped the British champion, John Atkins, shortly before entering the stadium and winning the race.

The Swiss also won the team event, with one of its members, Peter Frischknecht, taking the silver medal. Erik De Vlaeminck of Belgium was third.
