English soccer ... West Ham until recently have been leading the south's bid for the league championship. On Saturday they were at home to Midland side Leicester city, a B.B.C. report.....
COMMENTATOR: "At Upton Park where West Ham needed to beat Leicester to keep alive any serious hopes of winning the championship, Leicester played the first half with a strong wind at their backs and they made good use of it when Day was caught off his goal line. Day just managed to get back in time to save the shot from Whitworth. The wind caused confusion with anything high in the air and Leicester were lucky to survive a corner. And a long throw into the penalty area almost led to a goal for Alan Taylor. Leicester's most effective player was Weller. He created chances in mid-field and was ready to shoot from any distance. There was no score at half-time but West Ham took the lead after sixty-five minutes. The scorer ... Alan Taylor. Leicester equalised ... that mistake by West Ham's other Taylor, Tommy. And this time it was Lee who scored. The final result ... one-all, a disappointing result for West Ham."

Background: West Ham, who until recently were leading the south's challenge for the English Football League championship, lost another point at home on Saturday (10 January). They were held to a 1-1 draw by Midland side Leicester City.
The result left the east London side further adrift of the four northern teams who are jostling for the top position.
Leicester have not had a successful season but they were able to withstand the West Ham first half assaults with reactive ease.
Try as they might West Ham, who lost their last game at home, could not find their winning style of earlier in the season. Alan Taylor finally put them when Brooking's cross left him a clear chance from close in the 65th minute, but little more than ten minutes later Bob Lee intercepted a bad back pass from West Ham's other Taylor, Tommy -- and Leicester were level.
The score remained at 1-1 and Leicester were worth their point. West Ham will need to start winning at home again if they are to have any chance of winning the championship.
