Background: In Munich, Dec 20, a state funeral was held for the 49 victims of the Dec 17 aircrash which spread terror among Christmas shoppers, when an American Air Force plane plunged on to a crowded tram in one of the city's busiest streets.

Mourners including official representatives assembled in a large hall in Munich's exhibition grounds, where a guard of honour mounted by American soldiers and students, and Bavarian police and municipal transport personnel, stood by flower-bedecked coffins. The bodies to be buried in Munich were those of 29 Germans killed in the crash. There was a symbolic coffin, covered with the Stars and Stripes, for the seven American crew and 13 passengers who have already been transferred to the United States.

Speakers at the memorial ceremony were Mayor Vogel, Bavarian Premier Ehard, the American Ambassador and a representative of the American Air Force. The ceremony ended with a last personal tribute to the dead by their relatives.

Munich latest air disaster - coming shortly after civil aviation's worst, in New York, which cost 138 lives - brings to mind the tragedy at Munich Airport, in 1958, when 23 died in a crash that involved the Manchester United football team.
