TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: "CAN YOU MAKE A STATEMENT?"

MR. BALL: "WELL, I DON'T WANT TO MAKE A VERY LONG ONE - I DO WANT TO SAY THAT I HAVE HAD VERY SATISFACTORY, VERY USEFUL CONVERSATIONS HERE IN LONDON WITH THE FOREIGN SECRETARY AND WITH MR. DUNCAN SANDYS AND THAT I CAN SAY TO ALL OF YOU THAT THE VIEWS OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND THE VIEWS OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT ARE COMPLETELY IN ACCORD ON THE VERY DIFFICULT PROBLEM OF CYPRUS. THIS IS A PROBLEM WHICH WE MUST SOLVE... ON WHICH WE MUST SEEK A SOLUTION IN THE CLOSEST CO-OPERATION..... AS FAR AS MY GOVERNMENT IS CONCERNED WE'LL TRY TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO HELP AND BE HELPFUL IN THIS TRAGIC AND DANGEROUS SITUATION.

I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO SAY A WORD IF I MAY ABOUT MY OBSERVATIONS OF THE BRITISH FORCES IN CYPRUS. IN WAS IN NICOSIA FOR A PERIOD OF DAYS - IN CYPRUS AND I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO OBSERVE THE VERY EXCELLENT AND VERY DIFFICULT WORK THAT IS BEING DONE BY BRITISH TROOPS THERE. THE ROLE OF THE PEACEMAKER IS NEVER EASY AND THE ROLE OF THE PEACEKEEPER EQUALLY AS DIFFICULT. IT'S A ROLE THAT REQUIRES GREAT RESTRAINT, GREAT PATIENCE, GREAT UNDERSTANDING, GREAT COMPASSION...AND ALL OF THESE QUALITIES IT SEEMED TO ME WERE INDICATED ON THE PART OF THE BRITISH FORCES THERE AND I WOULD LIKE TO PAY THEM TRIBUTE AND TO SAY THAT ME COUNTRY IS GRATEFUL AT THEIR CARRYING ON THIS VERY ARDUOUS - THIS VERY WEARING AND FRUSTRATING TASK"
