    Background: DHAKA, BANGLADESH

A Bangladeshi airliner crashed on August 5 while making its final approach to Dhaka Airport, killing all 49 passengers and crew on board. Officials blamed the crash on foul weather which caused the pilot to lose control of the aircraft before reaching the runway. The following day, August 6, the wrecked aircraft was still submerged under twenty feet (six metres) of water--army and navy frogmen were called in to explore the wreckage. The Fokker F-27 aircraft, belonging to Bangladesh National Airlines, was on a domestic flight from Chittagong to Dhaka. President Hossain Mohammad Ershad ordered an immediate inquiry into Bangladesh's worst-ever aircraft disaster, which claimed the lives of at least 43 Bangladeshis, one British and one Japanese passenger.
