    INTRODUCTION: Egypt's President Anwar Sadat has appointed a caretaker committee of five bishops to replace the dismissed Coptic Pope, Shenouda 111.President Sadat stripped the pope of his powers as part of his purge to clear Egypt of any religious or political opposition to his 11-year-old regime.

    SYNOPSIS: The President went to Abdine Palace in Cairo for the meeting.His dismissal of the Pope caused anger and shock among members of the minority Coptic community which totals about six million in Egypt.President Sadat accused the Pope of attempting to set himself up as a political leader.Some members of the hierarchy of the Coptic Christian church are pleased with the President's strict measures.They hope they will help undermine the influence of the radical Muslim groups.The President and bishops reportedly discussed the "unity of the nation".

    One member of the newly-appointed Coptic council, Bishop Samuel, said the Copts would be the first to benefit from the restrictions.Another member, Bishop Athannasios, said the council had a responsibility to serve the church in accordance with President Sadat's directives.Some of the arrested religious extremists were Coptic Christian clergymen.
