Background: THOUSANDS OF INDIANS IN NEW DELHI ON SATURDAY (30 JAN), JOINED THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI AND PRESIDENT SARVAPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN, IN PAYING HOMAGE TO THE MEMORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI, WHO WAS ASSASSINATED 17 YEARS AGO.

THEY VISITED GANDHI'S MEMORIAL ON THE SITE OF THE PLACE WHERE HE WAS CREMATED. IT WAS COVERED WITH THOUSANDS OF BOUQUETS, GARLANDS AND WREATHS, PLACED BY THE CROWD.

MR. SHASTRI PLACED A GARLAND OF ROSES ON THE TOMB. HE THEN LED THE CROWD IN A COTTON SPINNING CEREMONY -- A SIGN OF GREAT RESPECT TO THE LATE LEADER WHO ADVOCATED HIS TIME FOR THE INDEPENDENCE OF INDIA.

SEVERAL VISITING JAPANESE BUDDHIST MONKS WERE ALSO PRESENT TO PAY THEIR HOMAGE. HIGH RANKING INDIAN ARMED FORCES PERSONNEL WERE AMONG THE HUGE CROWD.

THE LAST POST WAS SOUNDED BY BUGLERS DRAWN FROM THE INDIAN ARMED FORCES. AS GUNS BOMBED TO MARK THE OBSERVE OF A TWO-MINUTE SILENCE ALL OVER INDIA, TRAFFIC CAME TO A STANDSTILL. WORK STOPPED IN GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE OFFICES AND FACTORIES.
