Background: Chanting crowds again gathered outside the Nicosia home of President Makarios on Friday (18 Feb.) to shout their support for the Archbishop.
He is facing pressure from two sides. First from General Grivas--now believed to be living in Cyprus and pushing ahead with his campaign for union with Greece, and second from the Greek Government, which reportedly wants Archbishop Makarios to reshuffle his cabinet.
The crowd in Nicosia were rewarded when Archbishop Makarios himself came out of his house and mingled with the demonstrators to thank them for their support.
(Elsewhere on the island, supporters of President Makarios scuffled with other Cypriots supporting General Grivas. The police report no casualties.)
