Background: A SMALL HONG KONG MANUFACTURING COMPANY HAS RECENTLY REVIVED A STYLE OF FURNITURE ORIGINALLY RESERVED SOLELY FOR THE PALACES OF KINGS AND EMPERORS. IT'S KNOWN AS COROMANDEL - A DESIGN WHICH ORIGINATED ON THE COROMANDEL COAST OF INDIA SOME FIVE OR SIX HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

THE ENTIRE WORK IS DONE BY HAND, AND ONLY THE HIGHEST QUALITY MATERIALS USED, EVEN IF THESE MAY BE SOMETIMES RATHER CURIOUS TO NON-ASIAN EYES. FIRST THE JOINTS ARE BOUND WITH SILK. THEN A MIXTURE IS MADE OF PIG'S BLOOD WITH DRY POWDERED CLAY OR GROUND UP SHELL OR STONE. LAYER AFTER LAYER OF THIS SATANIC BREW IS APPLIED TO THE FURNITURE UNTIL THERE ARE AT LEAST SEVEN LAYERS, AND AN APPRECIABLE THICKNESS HAS BEEN OBTAINED.

THE SURFACE IS THEN POLISHED AND GROUND TO A MATT FINISH. NEXT, DESIGNS CAREFULLY DRAWN ON THIN PAPER ARE PASTED TO THE SURFACES, AND SKILLED WORKERS CUT ROUND THE DESIGNS TO A PRECISE DEPTH. THEY CUT TWO EXACTLY PARALLEL LINES A FRACTION OF AN INCH APART, AND THE AREAS BETWEEN THE CUTS ARE CAREFULLY SCRAPED AWAY LEAVING NARROW RIDGES WHICH FORM THE DESIGN.

WHEN THIS HAS BEEN DONE THE PAPER DESIGN IS REMOVED, AND THE HOLLOWED AREAS PAINTED IN THE REQUIRED COLOURS, THE EXCESS BEING EASILY WIPED AWAY FROM THE RAISED RIDGES, WHICH ARE LEFT BLANK. THE FINAL RESULT IS A UNIQUE AND VERY BEAUTIFUL TYPE OF FURNITURE, FIT FOR THE KINGS WHO CENTURIES AGO WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE PERMITTED TO POSSESS IT. IT BLENDS WELL WITH TRADITIONAL AND MODERN FURNITURE, AND, AS AN UNEXPECTED BONUS FROM THE PAST, IT'S HEAT RESISTANT.
