Background: At Wednesday night's (11 July) three-nation athletics meeting, held at Munich's Olympic Stadium, Dwight Stones, of the U.S.A. established a new world record for the men's high jump when he cleared the bar at 7 ft. 6 1/2 inches (2.30 m.)
The United States led West Germany by 60 points to 46 in the men's events after the first day of the two-day meeting. The West Germans led Switzerland, who are also competing, by 138 points to 67.
In the women's events, West Germany led both their rivals -- the United States by 40 points to 33, and Switzerland by 89-49.
SYNOPSIS: A new world-record for men's high jump was set in Munich on Wednesday night when 19-year-old Dwight Stones of the U.S.A. cleared 7 feet six and a half inches.
The men's 100 metres race was won by Steve Williams of the U.S.A.
Williams' time was 10.32 seconds. Second was Herb Washington, U.S.A., third was West Germany's Klaus Ehl.
In the women's 200 metres, Jackie Tompson of U.S.A. won with a time of 23.08 seconds.
Second was Annegret Kroniger of West Germany, and third was Inge Helten, also from West Germany.
The women's 100 metres hurdles was won by Patty Johnson of the U.S.A. Second was Switzerland's Meta Antennen, and third West Germany's Uta Nolte. The time 13.32 seconds.
The star of the meeting was 19-year-old student Dwight Stones of the U.S.A. With the bar set at seven feet six and a half inches. He was over the top with a leap that seemed to amaze both Stones and the crowd.
