Background: Throughout the Soviet Union recently there have been meetings and rallies to show "indignation at the military coup in Chile", and the "murder" of President Salvador Allende.

One such solidarity rally was held at the Ordjonikidze machine building plant. There, one speaker painted out the "indignation and wrath among the progressive forces of the world at the military coup in Chile".

A Soviet report says the workers at the plant, like all Soviet people, voice their protest against the unlawful deposition of the popular government in Chile. The workers pledged their support to the Chilean people and reaffirmed their international solidarity to them.

The speaker denounced "these who are trying to divert Chile from the course of progress and social gains". The crowd expressed the certainty that the Chilean workers would finally triumph over the forces of foreign and international reaction with the assistance of progressive-minded peoples the world over.

At the Sverdlow Vilk Combine in Moscow hundreds of white-collar workers at a solidarity meeting unanimously passed a resolution which said: "We protest the violence of the reaction and pledge our solidarity and support to the working class and all working people in Chile".

Another resolution was unanimously passed at a meeting held at the Institute of Latin American Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The resolution said the Institute's staff expressed their confidence that no reprisals could break the Chilean peoples' desire for freedom and democracy.
